Gateway
Gateway opens a new pathway from school to the world of work. It is a great opportunity to blend school study with workplace learning. Industry based standards are assessed in the workplace, counting towards school and tertiary qualifications.
Meet two of our Gateway students…….
Pippa Bratt
"I have been working every Friday at Rodney Wayne Hairdressing in Albany. I am completing Unit Standards towards my apprenticeship through Winters Hairdressing School. Overall, I have really enjoyed my Gateway work placement. It has opened my eyes to how a salon works and how you have to keep motivated. My goal is to continue hairdressing as a career and hopefully even open my own business."
Ben Matchett
"My experience with Gateway has been very interesting and extremely rewarding, especially as I have been involved in building a house from start to finish. Working with B & N Bos Contracting, Whangaparaoa, has given me the opportunity to learn new skills every week, ranging from putting up exterior weather boards to GIB board lining on the inside. I have also gained experience using a range of tools such as circular saws and screw guns. This program has "kick started" my career in the building industry and I would highly recommend Gateway as an option for Year 12 students."
Gateway at Rangitoto College is offered as an option subject at Year 12. The programme is aimed at students who are interested in making the transition from school into employment or an apprenticeship.
Students identify an industry they are interested in and spend one day per week in a work placement with a local employer. Gateway class time is used to work on individual learning plans which include generic employment and industry related standards. Time is also made available to catch up on work missed in other subjects while out on work placements.
The opportunity to experience work based learning outside of the Gateway option class is also available to a small number of Year 12 and 13 students. This type of programme requires students to manage a Gateway work placement in addition to their normal course of 6 or 5 subjects.
